Ever closer to the launch, we have discovered that you can't take Amtrack to Albany with your bike--at least not reliably. They asked for $20 in cash at the baggage handlers in Penn Station to put a bike on one and only one train a day that has a baggage car--all seemed odd, particularly when we called and went on line with Amtrack and were told that there was no provision for bikes at all on any trains to Albany. And the train number that the baggage handlers told us to take isn't listed on any schedule online. Perhaps a little freelance ingenuity on the part of the baggage guys, but made us worry that we might not get the bikes on at the last moment (if that train even exists) or that, if they do get on the train, they might never arrive in Albany. So we are renting a car one way to drive there and then heading out to the path from the airport rental car return.. seems rediculous not to be able to take public transport to a bike ride, but that is the scoop so far.

The baggage handlers story is so quintessentially New York. It probably would have worked too, but I totally understand your reluctance to rely on this as the lynch pin to your whole adventure.
